Split air conditioner an Option of Energy Efficient

Air conditioners use refrigeration to chill indoor air, taking advantage of a remarkable physical law: When a liquid converts to a gas (in a process called phase conversion), it absorbs heat. The split air conditioner comprises of two parts: the outdoor unit and the indoor unit. The outdoor unit, fitted outside the room, houses components like the compressor, condenser and expansion valve. The indoor unit comprises the evaporator or cooling coil and the cooling fan. In a split air conditioning, the amount of cold air entering the room can he controlled by a thermostat or it can be regulated by an infra-red remote control, like a TV remote. One room or one area of a building can maintain a different temperature from another room or area in the same building. Split air conditioning are the perfect solution for spot cooling.

Measurement of size of Split air conditioner:

Most air conditioners have their capacity rated in British thermal units (Btu).  A Btu is the amount of heat necessary to raise the temperature of 1 pound (0.45 kilograms) of water one degree Fahrenheit (0.56 degrees Celsius). The energy efficiency rating (EER) of an air conditioner is its Btu rating over its wattage. As an example, if a 10,000-Btu air conditioner consumes 1,200 watts, its EER is 8.3 (10,000 Btu/1,200 watts). One would like the EER to be as high as possible, but normally a higher EER is accompanied by a higher price. Because of the rising costs of electricity and a growing trend to "go green," most people are going for energy efficient cooling systems.

To optimize on costs, we need to look at 3 variables:
  1. EER (Energy Efficient Ratio): it indicates the ratio of the unit's cooling power output (BTU/hr) to that of its Power consumption (Watts) & is a measure of Air Conditioner's efficiency at maximum load. The AC unit with a higher EER is costlier but more energy efficient, which means it, will incur low electricity bills in the years to come.
  1. COP (Coefficient of Performance): This is the ratio of Output Power to Input Power in Watts and is unit less. COP's are rated at 47 F & 17 F. A higher COP means a more efficient system.
  1. STAR Rating:BEE (Bureau of Energy Efficiency) has instituted a STAR rating system that enables us to identify which AC has the right EER or COP to facilitate lower running costs and hence help us save on electricity costs! The higher the STAR rating the more the efficiency
Advantages of split air conditioner:

Central air systems provide a quality that is not available with conventional systems. The filter used in central air conditioning systems are changed frequently and easily by home owners.

Advantages of split air conditioner:

  • Central air conditioners make less noise. The condenser, fan and compressor are located in an outdoor unit, instead of in a nearby window. Indoor noise is barely detectable.
They don’t take up much space.Their compact size makes ductless AC units perfect for cooling small living spaces, such as apartments and dorm rooms.
  • They’re cost-effective.Ductless air conditioners use considerably less power than traditional air conditioners, which saves on your energy bill.
  • They’re easy to install. These cooling systems can be installed in much less time than it takes to put in central air conditioning. A two-person crew would need at least a week to install the ductwork and other components of a central air conditioning system.
  • The central air system does not take up any inside space and keeps the home looking modern and updated.
